Who is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?

A Psychiatric nurse practitioner (APN) is a certified medical professional that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental health and psychological problems. An APN has completed graduate school, in addition to at least three years of training in the field. Apns are board certified within their specialties. APNs are not only trained to diagnose and manage mental concerns but are also adept at providing psychotherapy.

Will I be forced to take medication?

No, here at NJI your provider will make recommendations based on symptom presentation but it is up to the client. Each individual must give informed consent in order for medications to be prescribed.

What is therapy like with us?

Initial sessions are about rapport building. The development of a genuine and authentic relationship in therapy is important to promote safe self-exploration and self-discovery. It is important for all clients to feel comfortable with their therapist. Our overall goal is to equip each client with the skills needed to manage all the stressors that they might experience daily. Sessions are focused on discussing concerns in your life and relevant events in the past week.

What will I gain from working with a therapist?

  • Finding more effective ways to cope with stress, depression, and anxiety
  • Attaining a better understanding of yourself and your personal goals and values
  • Better managing of emotional pressures
  • Improving communications skills – learn how to really “hear” others, and have others listen to you
  • Getting “unstuck” from unhealthy patterns
  • Discovering new ways to solve problems
  • Improving your self-esteem and boosting self-confidence

Will I be forced to attend therapy?

No, here at NJI your provider will make recommendations based on symptom presentation. As part of a holistic approach the provider may suggest attending therapy sessions. We recommend that all clients utilize therapy and medication management as needed.
